As 2017 closes and 2018 approaches, the New Year always seems like a great time to set goals and think about all of the things we’d like to accomplish. We asked the staff of Meander Publishing (the Publisher of both Machine Quilting Unlimited and Modern Quilts Unlimited) and asked them what their quilting related goals for 2018 would be.
Vicki Anderson, Owner and Founder of Meander Publishing, said, “TIME. My goal for this year is to make time to quilt. The past six months have been challenging for us at Meander Publishing – updating magazines, upgrading the website (stay tuned for that!), revising and re-releasing our digital versions, losing old friends on staff as they have changes and new opportunities in their lives and bringing on new staff with specific skills to help reach our goals … the one thing we can all use is more time.
I haven’t quilted much more than a set of placemats this year, but in 2018 I have bigger plans. I want to get back to an old love, crazy quilting, and embrace a new fascination, modern graphic quilts. And button art! I love buttons and I want to try my hand at creating something very personal – maybe a scene of my beloved Lake Eureka in buttons and sequins.”
Kit Robinson, editor of Machine Quilting Unlimited, said, “In recent years, I have given up making New Year’s resolutions because, let’s face it, I seldom keep them. All those promises to myself about losing weight, going to the gym, becoming a better cook, and cleaning my house from stem to stern seem to go by the wayside come February. Or mid-January.
This year I am going to listen to my family, my friends, and even my doctor, and get myself back into the great outdoors so I can smell the roses (and maybe find time to cut the poor bedraggled things back a bit), feel the cool breeze on my face, and experience the colors and sights that are right on the other side of my front door. I do not know how I have managed to get into such a habit of always sitting at my computer—the world is out there to inspire and energize!
For 2018 I resolve to venture out and experience the beauty and vibrancy of the natural world like I used to for at least a part of every day. After all, I live in Colorado, I have no excuse! And I think that my creative endeavors will be the better for it.”
Kathy Patterson, Machine Quilting Unlimited’s Associate Editor, told us, “In 2017, I tried something new (to me) when making sample blocks. I used fabrics from the same Moda fat quarter all year long for every sample. I now have a design wall full of memories! In early 2018 I plan to put all these blocks together into one quilt top, and empty my design wall for the samples I’m sure will be needed this year. I’m planning to use a pack of Kaffe Fassett 2018 prints I just received from FreeSpirit Fabrics, so the year is going to be bright and cheerful for sure!”
Andrea Abrahamson, Meander Publishing’s Media Manager, replied, “My new year’s resolutions? There’s many, such as visit family more, exercise more, save more, figure out what color my hair really is, learn that normal people really do take their their daughter – I mean dog – to be boarded so they can travel more… and yes, learn to quilt. There, I said it, after being in the industry since 2008, 2018 will be the year I attempt to learn to quilt. I’m not sure where I’m going to find the time but that is just an excuse. I’ve looked at quilts, I’ve read about quilts, I’ve sold a lot of ads for quilting products, I’m even lucky enough to have been given a few quilts so now it is time to learn to quilt. I’m not sure where to start but I’m lucky enough to know a few people I can turn to for suggestions. I can barely thread a needle so I have a loooooong way to go – wish me luck!”
Even Richard Anderson, Vice President, got in on the 2018 resolution action. “Although I don’t quilt, my resolution for 2018 is to find the highest and best use for the wonderful quilts Vicki and I have in our possession. Whether it’s appreciating our beautiful wall hangings, searching for that next addition to our collection, or most importantly, wrapping up in a warm quilt to watch TV or read a good book, I resolve to spend more time on these important activities in the coming year.”
Cheryl Sleboda, our newest staff member and blogger, had this to say, “Oh gosh, I have so many quilting goals for this year. One, I want to find time to make quilts for myself. Two, I have an enormous backlog of UFOs (UnFinished Objects) and quilts that are just blocks. My biggest goal would be to finish the oldest UFO in my collection, a Baltimore Album Quilt I started in 2000! My last goal would be to improve my quilting. It’s the one part that I’m the least happy with when looking at my own work, and I know it just needs practice. Working here at Meander Publishing is sure to give me lots of inspiration, being surrounded by some incredible people and quilters!”
All of us here at Meander Publishing and Machine Quilting Unlimited wish you the happiest and most prosperous New Year for 2018. We hope you reach all of your quilting goals in the coming year!
